For a second successive quarter, there were a relatively small number of deals involving the UK marketing and media sectors, according to the quarterly deal tracker published by Kingston Smith, the accountancy and business advice company.

The feature, which analyses mergers and acquisitions where either the target, acquirer or both are UK entities, reported 42 transactions. Of these, 24 were UK-UK transactions and the remaining 18 involved overseas entities, with 4 of the target companies based in Europe, compared to 3 in the US and 2 in the rest of the world.

The design sector was one of the more active ones, with deals including Writtle acquiring Identica, and the US-based brand solutions provider purchasing Equator, a grocery retail design specialist.

Kingston Smith expects deal numbers to improve signficantly in Q2, based on a rise in pre-deal activity - such as due diligence - experienced in the first quarter of 2017.
