As mobile becomes an increasingly important platform for news media distribution, Guardian News and Media has announced the launch of an ambitious project in the Unites States designed to develop new ways of using mobile.

The publisher’s US arm is to establish an innovation lab staffed by a multidisciplinary editorial and production team including designers, developers and reporters to develop and create new approaches to delivering news and information using mobile technology.

The lab will deepen The Guardian’s understanding of mobile news creation through research, development, testing and evaluation and the results will be shared with the wider news industry.

The Knight Foundation, a US foundation which funds projects aimed at promoting innovation in the media and journalism, is investing $2.6 million to support the lab and the Guardian’s efforts to share lessons learned within the field.
